Whipple's operation
- Pancreaticoduodenectomy for carcinoma of the head of pancreas
- A O Whipple (1881-1963). U S surgeon who was born in
Iran. He commenced surgical practice in 1910 and became Professor of
Surgery at Columbia, New York, and director of the surgical service at
the Presbyterian Hospital in 1921, retiring in 1946. Apart from his
contributions to disorders of the pancreas, he was an authority on
literature and ancient cultures and was especially interested in the
orient and in medical history. This is exemplified by his book "The
story of wound healing and wound repair" which was published shortly
before he died.
